McCallum Theatre Presents 'Carmen'

The celebrated St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre performs the dramatic "Carmen" at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California, on Monday, February 11, 2008, at 8:00pm. The full-length ballet in four acts is danced to music by Georges Bizet, with choreography and libretto by the company's Artistic Director Yuri Petukhov.

First performed in Paris in 1975, "Carmen", with all its drama and emotion, is set in Seville, Spain, and tells the story of a beautiful, seductive gypsy with a volatile temper. For the temptress Carmen, love is essential to life and few men understand the hidden world she hides behind her dazzling beauty. She woos the soldier Don Jose and ultimately drives their love to a tragic end when she finds another lover in the dashing bullfighter Escamillo.

As the first Theatre of Ballet in Russia, the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre has built an international reputation for its moving performances, lavish costumes, and electric choreography. Its creativity has been accumulated over the years, and the mastery of the high traditions of Russian ballet is being passed on to a younger generation of artists, both Russian and foreign. The repertoire of the company consists of both classical and modern ballet performances - more than 60 dances and twenty one-act ballets.

The St. Petersburg Ballet Theater is under the artistic direction of Yuri Pethukhov. Possessing the gift of creating the contrast between emotional imagery and classical technique ensured him leading roles in both classical and modern choreographic repertoires. As one of the most interesting performers of modern choreography, Yuri continues to create new works as well. He received first prize for best choreography and three first prizes as a balletmaster from international competitions throughout Russia and abroad. This performance is danced to recorded music.
