The latest play from David Edgar, one of Britain's greatest contemporary playwrights, arrives at the Playhouse this February in the hands of regular visitors Out of Joint Theatre Company.

Testing the Echo is a witty, charming and passionate exploration of Citizenship and the nature of 'Britishness', and runs from Tuesday 12 to Saturday 16 February with a cast including Robert Gwilym (Dr. Max in Casualty),and Sushil Chudasama (Scooter in Coronation Street and Behrouz in The Kindness of Strangers at the Everyman).

Tetyana studies in secret to escape her marriage, while Mahmood, kidnapped for his own good, has only his abductor to help him with revision practice. Meanwhile, the motley crew in Emma's English class are all looking for something, whether it's a passport - or a fight. As the day of their ceremony approaches, Emma's students begin to challenge some of her dearest-held beliefs.

By looking at the way we assess those who want to be British, Testing the Echo takes an illuminating and often very funny look at how we define ourselves as a nation. A multi-layered narrative, the cast of eight effortlessly swap between roles, races and ages to play over forty characters.

David Edgar's plays include Pentecost, Playing with Fire, Destiny and his adaptation for the RSC of Nicholas Nickleby, recently revived at Chichester Festival Theatre and now in the West End. Testing the Echo is directed by Matthew Dunster, Artistic Director of the Young Vic and long-time Out of Joint collaborator, his last visit to Liverpool was to direct 2005's Port Authority at the Everyman. Out of Joint are one of Britain's foremost producers of new writing and regulars at the Everyman and Playhouse. Recent productions here include The Overwhelming, King of Hearts, Talking to Terrorists and The Permanent Way. -- www.everymanplayhouse.com
