An exhibition of photography will be opening at Dance Base, Scotland's National Centre for Dance. Photographer and Community Artist, Sandra George has been taking photographs of the participants in the Dance Base Outreach Programme since April 2007 and will be showcasing her work to 23 February 2008.
Each week the Dance Base Outreach Programme works with up to 400 people in schools, youth groups, adult day centres and community groups. The photography exhibition will show some of these participants in action Taking dance to the places where people live, work or play is part of the Dance Base strategy to getting more people to dance.
Sandra George is a recent graduate of Edinburgh College of Art and completed a post-graduate diploma in Community Education at Moray House School of Education. She has been working as an artist in the community for over 25 years. She says "My main interest as an artist is in social documentary. I believe I work with people and do not see myself as being on the periphery. I also believe that photographs make participants feel that their contribution is valued."
Janet Dick, Dance Base's Outreach Co-ordinator said "The Outreach Programme is a very busy and successful part of Dance Base. The difficulty with such a successful activity is that you are often so busy doing the work you never get the chance to shout out loud and celebrate it! This exhibition is our way of doing that."
