The number of gay and bisexual men getting infected by the HIV virus is rising steeply in Sweden.

In 2007 the numbers of new cases in the southern Swedish county of Skåne rose by 80 percent compared to the year before. In Stockholm the numbers rose by a third.

The Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control is still tallying up the final figures, but warns that 2007 could be a record year, with over 500 new cases being reported in Sweden.

Experts say young people aren’t as scared of HIV and AIDS as they used to be, and many now see the disease as treatable. They are now calling for more information campaigns from the government to remind people of the dangers of the virus.
