Sweden’s Minister To Start Swedish-Based Imam Training

Sweden’s Minister for Higher Education and Research, former Liberal Party leader Lars Leijonborg, wants to start Swedish-based training for Muslim priests, Imams.

He says it could stop a radicalisation of Imams, many of whom are currently imported from the Middle East.

The courses would include Swedish language lessons and information about Swedish society. Denmark already has a similar system, and Swedish tax money already pays for training for Christian vicars.

Opposition politicians have welcomed the idea, and Muslim organisations are also broadly positive, as long as the Swedish state doesn’t get involved in the religious side of the education and limits itself to teaching the imams about Sweden.
