State Theatre presents Los Angeles dance troupe, Diavolo on Friday, February 15, 2008 at 8pm and Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 8pm for two nights of inspiring movement and dance. Diavolo's team of dancers, gymnasts, and actors twirl and fly across surrealistic set pieces to present crowd-pleasing and high-risk performances exploring the human condition.
Program includes Foreign Bodies, Humachina, Knockturne, D2RA, and Trajectoire. Diavolo is sponsored by Andy Chen and Heidi Mass. Tickets range from $35-55 (student, senior, and group discounts apply, plus limited *$20 tickets and *KIDS GO FREE discounts).
A 15-minute Q & A with the company will immediately follow each performance. In addition, FREE open rehearsals for Diavolo will be available on February 12 at 1pm and February 13 at 1:30pm. The unique performances emphasize values of trust, teamwork, collaboration, physicality, and artistry.
The Diavolo program will incorporate crowd favorites such as the Humachina, a piece between the cast and a large wheel that investigates human motion and mechanical relations between the simplest and most important of human machines, the wheel. Knockturne brings to the stage all the ordinary and extraordinary possibilities, difficulties and resulting absurdities of one of the most common structures in our architectural landscape – doors.
Tall doors, short doors, revolving doors, doors that flip—doors of all sizes, door that we enter, exit, reconfigure, climb and collide with every day of our life. In D2RA, a wall peppered with protruding metal bars reveals an abstract military obstacle course in the trenches of war. Another crowd pleaser is the Trajectoire, in which the group is set adrift on an abstract 21st century Galleon; the gripping motion of the back and forth rocking of the ship portrays the transcendence of the human soul against all odds. -- www.statetheatrenj.org
