President Bush has urged his conservative base to unite in order to keep Republican control of the White House in the November elections.
During a speech Friday before the Conservative Political Action Conference, Mr. Bush highlighted what he believes have been the successes of his seven years in the White House. Among the points he mentioned were his tax cuts and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The president said the tax cuts he successfully pushed during his first term have helped produce strong economic growth, and he insisted that they be made permanent.
He said the United States has successfully "gone on the offensive" against terrorists under his administration, and he defended his decisions to invade Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mr. Bush said it is important for a conservative to remain in the Oval Office because, in his words, "prosperity and peace are in the balance."
