President Bush is visiting Tennessee to survey the damage caused by a series of deadly tornadoes that ripped through the south-central United States this week.

Mr. Bush arrived in Tennessee Friday.

Officials say the powerful storm system Tuesday and Wednesday killed at least 57 people and injured hundreds more, with Tennessee suffering the brunt of the casualties. More than 30 people were killed and at least 149 people injured in that state alone.

The tornadoes also devastated parts of the neighboring states of Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Alabama.

Federal and local emergency teams have poured into those areas, and residents are cleaning up after the devastating storms that flattened houses and scattered debris throughout the area.
