Gas Pipeline Releases Heavy Metals

The construction of the planned gas pipeline though the Baltic Sea may result in a spreading of heavy metals. That’s according to a consequence analysis carried out by the construction consortium Nordstream.

Old toxics lying on the bottom of the sea will most likely start to circulate again when the pipeline’s brackets are fastened to the ground. But Nordstream suggests deploying anti-toxic substances in order to neutralize the heavy metals.

At present, the Swedish government is reviewing the analysis and is supposed to decide whether the gas pipeline may be built. It is supposed to deliver gas from Russia’s west coast to northern Germany – passing Swedish waters.

Environment organizations have repeatedly warned of the negative effects on the Baltic Sea’s ecological system.
