£30,000 was awarded to local charities in a prize-giving ceremony held yesterday at Cambridge University's Old Schools.
East Anglian Air Ambulance, the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and Press Relief each received £10,000 as beneficiaries of the Bridge the Gap Charity walk. The walk, which takes place every September, is a four and a half mile route through eight of the Colleges, taking in some of Cambridge's most spectacular architecture.
Jasmine Granger, age 10 from Witcham, near Ely was the top child fundraiser, collecting £131. Jasmine was presented with a BMX bike by the University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alison Richard at the ceremony.
Ninety staff from Cambridge University Press took part in the walk, raising £2,044 for the charities. This made them the top corporate team and they won a trip to compete in a Mini Grand Prix at Red Lodge Karting.
Valerie Moulding from Trumpington won a night in a DeVere hotel for being the top adult fundraiser and Simon Crowhurst from the Department of Earth Sciences will receive a money-can't-buy rooftop tour of King's College chapel for the best fancy dress.
Penny Wilson, Head of Community Affairs at the University said: “Bridge the Gap is a fantastic community initiative which enables local residents to explore the Colleges. We are very pleased with how much money has been raised for three very deserving local causes”.
The money raised will pay for 50 days care for the Hospice at Home appeal and help support two helicopters serving Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
