An expert in the laws protecting human rights defenders will visit the University this week. Hina Jilani, a leading lawyer in Pakistan and UN Special Representative of the Secretary General on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders, will address staff and students in a special lecture on Thursday 14 February, hosted by the Human Rights Law Centre.
The lecture — Protecting Human Rights Defenders — will take place at 10.30am in the Eversheds Law Seminar Room (B55), Law and Social Sciences Building on University Park. The lecture will be introduced by Michael O'Flaherty, HRLC Co-Director, Professor of Applied Human Rights and member of the UN Human Rights Committee.
Ms Jilani is a staunch defender of human rights, working in particular to secure the rights of women, minorities and children. She co-founded Pakistan's first all-female law firm in 1980 and the country's first legal aid centre in 1986.
As a UN Special Representative, Ms Jilani's role is to gather information of human rights defenders across the world and make recommendations to improve their protection. This includes visiting affected countries, taking up individual cases of concern with governments and reporting to the UN Human Rights Council and General Assembly.
