Public Broadcasters On Strike in France

Public broadcasters in France have launched a strike protesting government plans to cut advertising on public radio and television.

Radio France, Radio France Internationale, and France Televisions cut some of their programs, replaced several news shows with music, and reduced the information available on their websites. A protest march is scheduled for this Wednesday afternoon in central Paris.

Last month President Nicolas Sarkozy announced plans for the ban as a way of ensuring that public broadcasters focused on quality, rather than on commercial value. He suggested a tax on private broadcasting to help make up for the lost advertising funds. However, broadcasters expressed concerns that the plan was not clear enough, and that there was no assurance of funding for public television.
