Tuesday’s verdict in one of Sweden’s most observed rape trials has sparked a debate over judicial boundaries in similar cases.

Yesterday, a court in the southern town of Ystad had found internationally known opera singer Tito Beltran guilty of rape – sentencing him to two years in prison.

Critics argue that the prosecutor’s case has been damaged by a years-long delay in filing rape charges and by the fact that former Minister of Justice, Social Democrat Thomas Bodström had acted as joint plaintiff during the trail.

Tito Beltran’s lawyer has announced that his client will appeal to a higher court.
