At the annual shareholders meeting May 20 Southwest Chairman, President and CEO Gary Kelly announced that Southwest Airlines will begin service to Milwaukee in late 2009. The move comes as the united states domestic airline continues to expand at a rapid rate, adding the most new cities to it's system since 1996.

Southwest Airlines is the United States largest budget airliner with a fleet of over 500 planes, and 65 destinations served. Southwest will however face stiff competition in the Milwaukee market. AirTran Airways another low cost airliner operates a substantial operation out of Milwaukee. AirTran one of Southwest Airlines biggest competitors attempted to expand their operations at Chicago's Midway International Airport a few years ago but was thwarted by Southwest.

Milwaukee is the fourth city added to its network this year along with New York's LaGuardia, Boston, and Minneapolis.
