At around 10 a.m. Friday morning, the United States Coast Guard Group Astoria received a brief mayday call. Using a communications tower in Washington, the Coast Guard was able to pinpoint the location of the call. A 47ft lifeboat as well as a MH-60J rescue helicopter were immediately dispatched to the mouth of the Columbia.
All 6 men, were rescued and taken back to Cape Disappointment for medical care. It turns out the men were actually members of the Oregon National guard and were conducting a unspecified mission. Capt. Stephan Bomar, a spokesman for the Oregon Military Department said, "This is a great example of military services looking out for each other,".
