Michigan prison officials should know within a month whether California will send inmates to the Muskegon Correctional Facility, keeping it from closing. The medium security prison was recently visited by California officials, who proclaimed great interest in the site.

The Muskegon Correctional Facility that was slated to close and cause devastating job loss in the area, is remaining open until a final decision is made on California inmates. Tom Tylutki, president of the Michigan Corrections Organization, said the California inspection team was expected to make a favorable recommendation to that state's corrections department. His union supports the deal with California as it would help union members keep their jobs.

This deal is also vital for California, a state that has been suffering through a major budget crisis and has had to cut spending for Prisons, inmates and many more services.
