Ill. Gubernatorial Campaign Starts Today

Filing day began today as hundreds of Illinois politicians lined up to to file for the February primary election and get a chance to be listed on the ballot. One of the more significant races is the 2010 Gubernatorial campaign, which will feature a host of well known Illinois leaders vying for the top executive spot.

Incumbent Governor Pat Quinn will be facing off against Comptroller Dan Hynes and many others in the upcoming Democratic Primary. While the GOP primary will likely be much tighter featuring State Sens. Bill Brady of Bloomington and Kirk Dillard of Hinsdale, DuPage County Board Chairman Bob Schillerstrom and Adam Andrzejewski, a Hinsdale businessman. Former Republican Candidate for Governor Jim Ryan has yet to file yet but when he does he is likely to, "at least double the 5,000 signatures required."

Another returning face will be former Illinois Green Party Candidate for Governor, Rich Whitney. In 2006 Whitney received 10.4% of all votes cast, which formally established the Green Party in Illinois. The 2006 election was also showing of how the state as a whole has become more democratic over time, as now ousted Governor Rod Blagojevich beat Republican Judy Bar Topinka by a wide margin despite his corruptness.
