Trans-Siberian link in the pipeline

A new trans-Siberian link is in the process of being established by the Department of Earth Sciences at Royal Holloway, University of London. Initial plans are in place for a dual award Masters programme in Petroleum Geoscience with Tyumen State Oil and Gas University (TSOGU) in Siberia, in partnership with TNK-BP.

TNK-BP is one of the largest oil companies operating in Russia employing 90,000 people, combining the best Russian and international expertise. As part of its investment in technology and the training and development of its people, TNK-BP selected Royal Holloway from an initial international list of eight universities to set up a Masters degree programme with TSOGU, one of only four petroleum universities in Russia and the only university of its kind in Siberia and the Far East.

The course will be taught entirely at TSOGU, with contributions from Royal Holloway staff and staff from Tyumen who will be partly trained by Royal Holloway. It will be delivered via a number of teaching methods, making full use of e-learning technology to share course materials and video conferencing facilities for tutorial and seminar work. New laboratories at Tyumen will be equipped with similar advanced computing facilities to those at Royal Holloway enabling students to work with standard oil industry software.

TNK-BP will sponsor 20 students a year initially for two years and the two universities will aim to recruit additional students from other companies operating in Russia. The degree will provide highly qualified graduates who can work across a range of disciplines in a team environment.

Commenting on the challenge of establishing this degree, Dr Chris Elders, who is leading the collaborative project, said “This is a really exciting project. The planning and logistics required to deliver our existing Masters programme in a completely different environment are incredibly complex, but the potential is tremendous. Russian universities produce exceptionally well trained specialists, but international oil companies require graduates who can apply their knowledge across a range of subjects and who can operate in multidisciplinary teams. Demand for such graduates is enormous, particularly in Russia, and this is the training that our MSc course will provide. It is a great accolade that the Royal Holloway based course, which has been running now for 22 years, has received such international recognition.”
