Tighter Rules For Swedish Language Lessons

The Swedish government wants to tighten the rules for Swedish language lessons for newly arrived immigrants.

Education Minister Jan Björklund and Integration Minister Nyamko Sabuni want to introduce final exams and a time limit on how long people will be able to take the courses, which are state subsidised. They are suggesting a limit of 3 years, but will set up a study to look at the pros and cons.

The ministers also want to earmark more money to give the language teachers more on-the-job training.
