Detroit Orchestra Presents Jazz Double Bill

A powerful pair of Grammy-nominated jazz artists, singer Tierney Sutton and pianist Jacky Terrasson, together with their bands, are poised to perform their live shows in Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center for the first time on Friday, February 22. The double bill takes place at 8 p.m. and is part of the LaSalle Bank Paradise Jazz Series.

Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, Tierney Sutton has dazzled audiences for more than 14 years with her powerful voice which has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald.

Composed of vocalist Sutton and instrumentalists Christian Jacob, Trey Henry, Kevin Axt and Ray Brinker, the Tierney Sutton Band has found success with the help of great chemistry, on and off stage, as well as their new takes on old standards. In recent years, they have headlined at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and Jazz at Lincoln Center and have appeared at the Monterey, Marciac and Umbria jazz festivals. They have recorded seven CDs to date.

The most recent, On the Other Side, was nominated for a 2007 Grammy Award in the best Jazz Vocalist category and was hailed by BusinessWeek as "a masterpiece... eloquent, honest and magnificently sung and played." In 2005, the band received another Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammy nomination, and Sutton was acknowledged by JazzWeek as Vocalist of the Year.

Jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson was named "one of the 30 artists under the age of 30 most likely to make an impact on American culture in the next 30 years" by The New York Times Magazine in 1993. Now 41, his live performance skills have afforded him opportunities to accompany jazz giants such as Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jimmy Scott, Betty Carter and Ry Cooder.

His career highlights include two Grammy Award-nominations and winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, a scholarship given to the world's most accomplished young musicians. His latest album Mirror, a combination of reworked standards and his own original compositions, displays his signature versatility and improvisational techniques. The Jacky Terrasson Trio also consists of bassist Sean Smith and drummer Jamire Williams.

TICKETS to the LaSalle Bank Paradise Jazz Series concerts range in price from $19 to $60. A limited number of box seats are available at $99. -- www.detroitsymphony.com
