Help yourself to a little Touch

Who knew what a trendsetter Dr. Kawashima would be? Since the arrival of Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old is Your Brain? in June 2006, millions of people across Europe have snapped up all sorts of software to sharpen their minds.

Now with the release of Prof. Kageyama’s Maths Training: The Hundred Cell Calculation Method, Brain Trainers across Europe have another opportunity to get in on the daily training phenomenon.

Titles that focus on mental agility instead of how fast you can press a button have found a home with both traditional game players and those who normally don’t play. Part of the reason for that is that anyone in the family, young or old, can utilise these titles, and most of the Touch! Generations titles can be found for €29 / £19 or less – cheaper than most games on the market. Check out some of these mentally challenging titles that are available at your local store for Wii and Nintendo DS.

Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training and More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima

Inspired by the theories of neuroscientist Dr. Ryuta Kawashima, Brain Training and More Brain Training are collections of simple daily exercises that help stimulate the brain and help keep it young. The Brain Training titles are designed to be played for just a few minutes each day, and the software tracks your daily progress on your quest to get the lowest DS Brain Age of all – Age 20.

Many of the exercises in the Brain Training titles focus on recognition and how fast your brain can come up with an answer for what you see. Some exercises call for you to memorise the order of numbers or the words you see on-screen. Others throw simple maths questions your way to test your speed and accuracy.

Both Brain Trainers also feature multiplayer functionality, letting you square off against your friends and family to quick mental challenges.

Professor Kageyama’s Maths Training

Whilst Brain Training provides a more generalised approach to stimulating your brain, Maths Training puts the focus squarely on calculations in an effort to enhance your family’s maths skills.

Like Brain Training, Maths Training focuses on the most basic of mathematics problems with the keys being repetition and speed. The more you correctly answer a problem, the faster you’ll be able to recall the answer in the future.

The Daily Test in Maths Training presents you with three exercises chosen to match your current level of study. You can only complete the test once per day. If you take the test every day and gain good marks, you will be able to move up to the next level. In total, there are 20 levels of study.

Big Brain Academy and Big Brain Academy for Wii

Head over to the Big Brain Academy for mental stimulation with a light-hearted flavour! The Big Brain Academy games feature five distinct categories to exercise – and measure – your mind. Although Big Brain Academy doesn’t include a daily training mode, per se, you can take a Test at any time. Once you’ve completed the Test, the game tells you how big your in-game brain weighs.

Big Brain Academy challenges your logical thought processes, your recognition and memorisation abilities and your visualising skills. Once you solve a problem, the game instantly adjusts its next question based on how you answered. The faster and more accurately you answer questions, the tougher the challenges get – leading to a bigger brain weight.

Both the Wii and DS versions of Big Brain Academy feature fun multiplayer challenges so you can see whom among you and your crew have the biggest brains! The Wii version of the game also has a cooperative feature so you can all work together to amass the largest collective brain possible. That would be one big brain!
