Music Director Edward Cumming will conduct the Family Matinee concert “Coming to America” with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m. at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford. This program is a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States.

The winning pieces from a writing contest conducted earlier this season, during which students were asked to describe their family history and experience with immigration to America in 400 words or less, will be on display in the lobby of The Bushnell.

The two first-place winners were Michael James Mack (Grade 3, Duffy Elementary School, West Hartford) and Kate Lamberti (Grade 4, Highcrest School, Wethersfield). Second place went to Zachary Wilson (Grade 2, Roadside Academy, Middletown) with third place going to Shraya H. Poetti (Grade 1, Roadside Academy, Middletown). The concert will include music by Aaron Copland, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn, Aram Khachaturian, and Gustav Holst (please see below for full program).

The Family Matinee Series is geared for the whole family with a variety of INTERACTIVE MUSICAL ACTIVITIES for children, including the Hartford Symphony’s “Instrument Zoo”, crafts and games beginning at 2:00 p.m. the day of the concert in the lobby of The Bushnell. The pre-concert activities are free for concert ticket holders.

The Hartford Symphony Family Matinee Series is presented by the Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation.
