The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and The Band of the Coldstream Guards march onto the stage of the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California, on Monday, February 25, at 7:00pm. Performing in full dress uniform and with the drama and pageantry of British regimental pipe and drum bands, any performance of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and The Band of the Coldstream Guards is a moving and unforgettable experience.
Formed in 1971, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards have performed around the world and have released many successful albums while also undertaking military assignments in service to the Queen. All members of the Pipes and Drums are fully trained tank-crew members and were deployed for two tours in Kosovo, and as part of the 7th Armored Brigade during the Gulf War in 1991, 2003 and 2006. They have served as part of the NATO lead stabilization forces helping to keep the peace in the former Yugoslavia state of Bosnia.
Famous for its outstanding Pipes and Drums, which often perform at the Edinburgh Tattoo, the Guards hit #1 on the British charts with their stirring rendition of "Amazing Grace." The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and its predecessors have a history that is dominated by exploits by man and horse. Indeed, the Regiment has only been mechanized for some 60 years of its 320 year history. Though horses have been replaced by tanks and armored cars, it is the cavalry spirit of the past which provides the inspiration for the future.
The Coldstream Regiment, one of the oldest in the world, was formed in 1650 as part of Oliver Cromwell's "New Model Army." In 1661, shortly after the restoration of the monarchy, they were re-commissioned by King Charles II as Household Troops from the town of Coldstream which lies just inside Scotland. The Coldstream Guards band became the first band to visit North America when it traveled to Canada in 1903, one of two western tours around that time. Today, the Band of the Coldstream Guards consists of 49 musicians, who, apart from performing, see duty as medical workers, and in the event of a full-scale conflict, would be called upon to be stretcher bearers and field hospital assistants. The last ten years have seen the band involved with what is probably the most intense period of international travel in its entire history. Not only has the band undertaken many duty trips, but has also gone on many private and commercial tours around the world.
