Shortage of Mother-Tongue Teachers in Sweden

A Swedish Radio news survey concludes that half of Swedish local governments provide no mother-tongue education for immigrant and refugee youngsters - because of the lack of teachers.

Local authorities are allowed to suspend this otherwise obligatory education only if they can not find proper teachers. Some say they can’t even find teachers in Finnish - the largest group of immigrants in Sweden.

Hardest to find are teachers in Romani, Somalian, Arabic and Kurdish.

The survey covered 250 of Sweden’s 290 local governments.
