The World Food Programme (WFP) is experiencing serious financial problems due to rising food prices. The head of the United Nations food aid agency, Josette Sheeran, says nearly 340 million euros is needed just to finance operations already in the pipeline.

She is pushing for hundreds of millions of euros on top of this figure to accommodate unforeseen crises. In Afghanistan alone, over 50 million euros' worth of aid is need to feed two and a half million people.

Food prices have risen by 70 percent since 2002 because of spiralling demand from China and India and the use of crops for bio-fuel. The WFP is calling on donors to provide the extra cash.
