The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Edo de Waart entered into an unprecedented annual collaboration with the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts when the Chief Conductor came on board four years ago.
In a week long preparation that includes rehearsal and individual coaching by the Principal musicians of the Orchestra, music students of the HKAPA have the chance of performing side by side with professional musicians of the Philharmonic, under the guidance of the internationally renowned conductor Maestro Edo de Waart.
The fruit of this year’s collaboration will be displayed on 1 March (Saturday), 8pm, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.
Each time, challenging symphonic repertoire is chosen to expand the technical and musical frontiers of the students. This year, it is Stravinsky’s notoriously difficult score, The Rite of Spring and Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, a work that requires crystalline technique and perfect intonation.
In addition, Concertmaster John Harding will lead six Fellows of the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation and an HKAPA student in the first movement of Mendelssohn’s most famous chamber work – his Octet for Strings, Opus 20.
The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Orchestral Fellowship Scheme was created to provide professional development for promising young string musicians. It provides places for up to ten Chinese musicians per year from distinguished regional music institutions and is fully endowed by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, which shares the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s commitment to nurturing and supporting artists of outstanding potential. -- www.hkpo.com
