A new Swedish study suggests that offering care to drug addicts can save society money.
Figure crunching shows that Stockholm’s methadone program consisting of 600 participants costs US$10 million annually. The statistics calculated on behalf of the Swedish National Drug Policy Coordinator suggests that without treatment, that cost would be over US$160 million each year.
The study was commissioned by the government’s former coordinator on narcotic questions, Björn Fries.
