A seed bank has been officially opened on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, an initiative of the Norwegian government and the Global Crop Diversity Trust, has been built in an artificial cave carved out of the polar ice.

It is designed to store the seeds of one million agricultural plants so that, in the event of a disaster, the world can fall back on the stored genetic material. This will help maintain the world's biodiversity and guarantee global food supplies. The seed bank can hold up to four and a half million specimens.

Among guests at the ceremonial opening were Nobel Prize-winner Wangari Maathai and the chair of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso.
