Entitled 'From United Nations Commission on Human Rights to Human Rights Council: Reflections on the Transition', the lecture takes place on Friday 7 March at 5pm in the Lecture Theatre Building (LTB 8) on the Wivenhoe Park campus.
It is part of a year-long programme of special events to mark 25 years of human rights study and practice at Essex. The University boasts the longest-established postgraduate degree in International Human Rights Law in the UK, and the Human Rights Centre has since developed a pioneering human rights programme at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Centre has more than 1,200 graduates, from more than 100 different countries spanning the globe.
Ambassador de Alba has been Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva since 2004. He was Chairman of the Committee on Disarmament and International Security of the United Nations General Assembly (First Committee) in 2004; President of the Council of the International Organization for Migration from 2005 to 2006; and President of the United Nations Human Rights Council from June 2006 to 2007.
