Angela Au Plays At McCallum Theatre

Piano virtuoso Angela Au astonishes audiences at every concert with her incredible musical gifts. She will make her appearances at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California, on Monday, March 3, 2008, at 8:00pm.

Angela Au began her piano lessons at the age of six. After nine months of learning, she won her first prize, a grand championship, and went on to break all records by winning over a dozen championships, including China's first nationally-televised 1984 Pearl River Prize: Guangzhou - Hong Kong - Macau Piano Invitation Competition. In 1986, Angela made her debut as Hong Kong's youngest-ever soloist in a piano recital sponsored by the German Consulate General. In October, she was chosen to play for Queen Elizabeth II to honor the Royal visit to Hong Kong.

In 1987, she became the first Hong Kong-born pianist admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Gary Graffman and Eleanor Sokoloff.

During the 1988-1999 season, Angela made her debut tour in the Boston area. In January 1990, Angela appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, performing Mozart's "Piano Concerto K.488." In February 1991, Angela made her London debut at the Royal Festival Hall, performing with the London Mozart players in the presence of Princess Alexandra.

Angela first appeared with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in its curtain-raising concerts for the 1991-1992 season at Shatin and Tuen Mun. In the 1992-1993 season, Angela was active a series of concert engagements, including recitals in the prestigious Lane Series in Vermont and the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts in Chicago and orchestral appearance with the Philadelphia Pops.

On completion of her high school education and musical studies at Curtis, Angela completed a degree in economics at Harvard.
