Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt met with his Afghan counterpart Dr Ranging Dafar Spanta in Stockholm Tuesday, and protested against the death sentence passed against the 23 year old Afghan journalist Perwiz Kambakhsh.

Kambakhsh was sentenced last month, accused of spreading an article from the internet that was said to have defamed Islam.

Bildt says that verbal protests are all that the Swedish Government can do, but that he has brought up the issue both at the EU and with the bilateral talks with the Afghan government.

The ministers also discussed Sweden’s peacekeeping troops in Afghanistan, with Dr Spanta saying he was pleased that Sweden’s involvement in Afghanistan is long term and he hoped it would help continue the democratic processes in the country.
