The program includes Haydn’s magnificent “Te Deum,” Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” a richly textured work set to excerpts from James Agee’s short story “Knoxville,” and Ein deutsche Requiem, one of the most deeply personal and religious works of any century.
Conductor Robert Russell leads the Concert Conversation at 6:15 p.m. in the Rehearsal Hall at Merrill Auditorium; this is free for ticket holders.
Soloists Mary Wilson (soprano) and Philip Cutlip (baritone) will join the Portland Symphony Orchestra and Masterworks Chorus of the Choral Art Society to bring this enchanting music to life. Guest conductor Robert Russell, Music Director of the Choral Art Society and professor of music at the University of Southern Maine, has been an integral part of Portland’s music scene for the past 25 years, receiving the Excellence in Teaching Award on behalf of his students at USM and honored for his life-long dedication to excellence in choral performance by the Portland Conservatory of Music.
