Poetry Slams @ The Max, a battle between Detroit's top spoken-word artists, continues March 6 with the fourth competition of the season. In the series, a Max M. Fisher Music Center staple since 2004, poets express their views on issues ranging from sex to racism to politics, incorporating everything from biting humor and incisive commentary to brilliant wordplay.

The event begins at 8 p.m. in The Music Box and includes a full bar, food service and free Starbucks coffee.

The event will be hosted by Kalimah "Locmama" Johnson of "Pic-Nap Poetry," a weekly poetry series held at various locations in the metro Detroit area. This Slam will also feature singer/songwriter and poetry instructor Blair, a National Poetry Slam champion and coach of the Detroit Youth Slam Team in 2006. Blair has appeared on HBO's Def Poetry Jam and has been featured in HOUR Detroit magazine and Real Detroit weekly. Dj InCredibul will provide the musical entertainment for the evening.

Poets do not need to pre-register to compete; a sign-up sheet will be available the night of the event. Participants are allowed three minutes and are judged by a jury of audience members. Compositions must be written by the performers, and they may not use props, costumes, or musical instruments.

Cash prizes, gift cards and tickets to Detroit Symphony Orchestra events will be awarded to the top poets of the evening. Poetry Slams @ The Max are sponsored by Starbucks Coffee, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan. -- www.detroitsymphony.com
