The rarely programmed Isle of Bliss, is a hidden gem by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. This lush, melodic piece is based on the thematic ideal of a peaceful island haven. In keeping with the theme of the evening, clarinet virtuoso, Dimitri Ashkenazy will perform Danish composer Carl Nielsen's edgy, rhythmic Clarinet Concerto, Op.57.
This piece is performed with a pared-down orchestra and features a brilliant cadenza from the snare drum. Dimitri is the son of Vladimir Ashkenazy who conducted the WASO Gala concert last year. The program concludes with Antonin Dvorak's dramatic Symphony No. 7, one of the most glorious of his nine symphonies.
The work caused the composer great consternation as he struggled to win recognition and success, not only in his own country, but internationally as well. At the conclusion of the Friday evening performance there will be a free post-concert talk by Arild Remmereit. The concerts will take place on 14 & 15 March. -- www.waso.com.au
