Claus Peter Flor Performs With Singapore Orchestra

It was probably a combination of Brahms' fastidiousness and his insecurity at being dubbed "Beethoven's successor" that caused him to take 14 years to produce his First Symphony. In any case, it became nicknamed "Beethoven's Tenth", much to his annoyance. On April 4, Claus Peter Flor will conduct this work with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Max Bruch's Concerto for Clarinet and Viola is a work of great beauty, and perfectly matched to the autumnal sound colours of the clarinet and viola, played by Ma Yue and Zhang Manchin. The evening opens in true dramatic fashion with the popular Overture and Bacchanale from Tannhauser.

Born in Leipzig in 1953, Claus Peter Flor is respected by musicians the world over as a hugely gifted conductor, and for his instinctive musicality. In September 2003 he took up the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. He also currently holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. In the 08/09 season, he will assume his position as Music Director of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. -- www.sso.org.sg
