Rodger Vaughan, who graduated with a BM in music theory in 1953, has had a very successful career composing for low brass instruments. Vaughan is a long-time resident of Los Angeles where he was professor of music theory and composition at the California State University-Fullerton for over thirty years. His works are regularly performed by brass players all across the world.
His work with the legendary Tubadours, the notable tuba quartet, is still admired today. As the Tubadours' primary arranger, Vaughan's skill in creating diverse repertoire for the tuba quartet was most evident. His famous arrangements included in the Mirafone Quartet Books are still available today.
This recital will include Vaughan's "Concert Pieces For Tuba No. 1 and No. 2," as well as his "Songs for Soprano and Tuba" and "Manchester Parade." A set of tuba quartets made famous by the Tubadours will be performed at the concert. Performers include Scott Watson, KU professor of tuba-euphonium and Principal Bass and Tuba with the Fountain City Brass Band; Thomas Stein, professor of tuba-euphonium at UMKC and Solo Tuba of Fountain City Brass Band; Lee Harrelson, professor of low brass at Missouri Western and Principal Euphonium and founder of the Fountain City Brass Band; Helen Tyler, Principal Baritone of the Fodens Richardson Band (United Kingdom) and Principal Baritone of the Fountain City Brass Band; Travis Hendra, KU doctoral music student and members of the KU Horn Studio.
