Lufthansa's airplane barely avoided crashing during landing as strong winds were carrying the plane aside. Eventually the pilot decides to take off again thus saving the people and the plane.
Passengers of the Lufthansa airplane had a good scare during landing when the aircraft literally danced on the runway.
A Lufthansa airplane, carried by strong winds, almost crashed during a landing attempt at the Hamburg airport. But the pilot avoided a disaster at the last second. The strong winter storm Emma, which has already caused the death of 13 persons across Europe, almost cost the lives of 137 people. Due to winds of up to 250 kilometres per hour, the Lufthansa airplane rocked above the runway. But everything ended well, thanks to the pilot. See the landing in the MULTIMEDIA. Those several seconds were indescribable, said one of the passengers, as quoted by Spiegel Online. Lufthansa’s spokesman said the passengers were rather shaken. Many did not handle it well. Some were on the verge of tears, he said. - Source: javno.com

#1 Why would the powers that be
Why would the powers that be even allow this plane to land? The runway should be closed in winds/gusts this high. This is hurricane force wind. I'm sure the passengers were doing more than just crying!
#2 they allow plane landings in
they allow plane landings in cross winds, airports need to land a certain amount of aircraft an hour, sometimes they are desperate, and dont care about the weather conditions.
but for this case i think it was just wind shear (sudden change of wind power and wind direction) that occured just before he touched down. search Crosswind landings on youtube, there are several crosswind landings in high wind and they manage to land fine.
just be thankful nothing bad happened. :)
#3 and the 250km/h winds are
and the 250km/h winds are lies, it was only 90km/h winds
*double post, sorry* forgot to add this before
#4 The actual cross winds are
The actual cross winds are not a problem, if they are steady. Only when the cross winds are gusting do they pose a threat. This particular aircraft was unlucky.
#5 If the conditions (Xwind &
If the conditions (Xwind & Runway) exceeded the aircraft limits then the landing attempt should have not been made. The film does provide evidence that the transition from crab to slip prior to touchdown was botched. What happened to low wing into the wind ? Above the limit or not the proper crosswind correction was not used. The video provides the evidence that some additional pilot training is needed. Send her back to Arizona for a few weeks !
Also what do you suppose the (co)pilots TT is ? She would probably (at most) be flying right seat in a 1900 in the States.
LH grow your own pilot system seems to have worked well so far but there is no substitute for experience.
A few hundred hours working as a CFI would have provided her a more solid set of stick and rudder skills.
Hope the LH training staff is seeing this for what it was.
