Sales of the products earned the monopoly Apoteket 75 million US dollars in 2007.
Supermarket managers say it’s only natural that they should be able to sell the nicotine plasters and gum, as they also sell cigarettes and wet snuff. The nicotine replacements are officially classified as drugs, and are the first non-prescription drugs to be on sale outside of the monopoly. Next in line to be on sale on the high street could be painkillers such as paracetamol and asprin.
