Nicotine Gum On Sale In Swedish Stores

One of the cornerstones of the Swedish drugstore monopoly can now be sold in ordinary stores. Nicotine replacements, such as chewing gum, can now be sold in stores and supermarkets in Sweden as of Saturday.

Sales of the products earned the monopoly Apoteket 75 million US dollars in 2007.

Supermarket managers say it’s only natural that they should be able to sell the nicotine plasters and gum, as they also sell cigarettes and wet snuff. The nicotine replacements are officially classified as drugs, and are the first non-prescription drugs to be on sale outside of the monopoly. Next in line to be on sale on the high street could be painkillers such as paracetamol and asprin.
