Swedish authorities don’t check animal welfare when they buy in products, according to a documentary on Swedish TV4.
The issue has come into the spotlight following a documentary highlighting the practice of mulesing on Marino sheep in Australia, where the farmers cut off the sheep’s skin without pain relief.
The Swedish Police have recently bought undergarments made from Merino wool, without checking the animal welfare, and according to Ann-Kristin Stegå from the Swedish Board of Agriculture, how the animals are treated is usually not a priority when signing deals. Instead they look more closely at the working conditions for the farmers, and say it is hard to check up how the animals are doing.
But Agriculture Minister Eskil Erlandsson now wants the board to include animal welfare in its criteria when buying in animal products from abroad.
