D3hoops to carry NCAA Tournament announcement

For the William Smith College basketball team, perhaps the hardest part of March Madness is the waiting. In less than 24 hours the worst part of the waiting will be over.

The NCAA is expected to announce the 63-team field for the 2008 Division III Women's Basketball Tournament by 10 p.m. tonight. The bracket will be announced at 9 a.m. on Mon., March 3.

The best place to get both announcements is D3hoops.com. D3hoops is the premier Web site for information regarding Division III basketball. Earlier today, D3hoops posted its predicted 63-team field, which includes the Herons as the top seed in one of the eight regions.

William Smith won the Liberty League regular season championship, but finished second in the conference tournament. The League's automatic bid (one of 39 into the field) goes to the tournament champion. Twenty-one of the remaining slots go to runners-up in those 39 conferences, while the remaining three bids are reserved for teams that are not in those 39 conferences.

The Herons finished the regular season with a 23-3 record, marking the 13th 20-win season for the program. The Herons are looking for their third tournament bid in the past four seasons and 13th overall.

William Smith began the final week of the regular season ranked first in the NCAA East Region Poll, 13th in the USA TODAY/ESPN Coaches Poll, and 17th in the D3hoops Top 25.
