Europe’s defences against infectious diseases were strengthened in Sweden today with the official opening of an Emergency Operations Centre at the EU’s Disease Prevention and Control Agency in Stockholm, the ECDC.
Using state of the art technology, the operations centre, which is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, will help the ECDC monitor developments as they occur, assess the threat posed to EU countries and advice on possible counter-measures.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives of the European Commission , the European Parliament and EU member states.
Miroslav Ousky, Chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment , Public Health and Food Safety said:
”When emergencies happen Europe’s citizens expect national authorities and EU level bodies to work together to protect them. That is why the European Parliament mandated the ECDC to create an Emergency operations Centre. Better information sharing and co-ordination can help save lives.”
The European Centre For Disease Prevention And Control was opened in Stockholm in 2005.
