Eva Ayllon, one of Peru's foremost Afro-Peruvian musicians, debuts at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Friday, March 7, at 8 p.m. With a recording career that spans over 30 years and 20 albums, Ayllon is one of the leading interpreters of Peru's musica criolla, and is deservedly known as the Queen of Lando. This performance is part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's 2007/2008 World Music series.
Ayllon's music focuses on the elegant and lively genres of the coastal plains of Lima. She is known for singing the lando, the festejo, and the vals, all mestizo blends of Peru's indigenous, African, and Spanish musical heritage. The guitar recalls flamenco idioms one moment and alludes to Andean mountain music the next. The cajon, a wooden percussion box thought to be derived from an agricultural crate, translates African rhythms to Latin America. Call-and-response, complex syncopation, and polyrhythms combine with sweet, melancholic melodies to create a sound unique to Peru's diverse ancestry.
In 2004, Ayllon released her first U.S. album, Eva! Leyenda Peruana. Since then, she continues to expand boundaries, touring across Europe, North America and Latin America extensively.

For 30 years Afro-Peruvian singer EVA AYLLON has been selling out theaters not only in Peru, where she can fill a stadium of 30,000, but here in North America as well. After emerging in the early 70s, Eva immediately set a landmark by establishing herself as the leading exponent of Afro-Peruvian music. Eva's recording career spans over 20 albums and includes a double Latin Grammy nomination in 2003 and a double Platinum album in her native Peru. Eva Ayllon, born Maria Angelica Ayllon Urbina, adopted the name "Eva" after her maternal grandmother, who initiated her in vocalization at the age of three.
By the early 1970s, Eva began to appear in many of the local "penas criollas," a gathering of musician friends, and began to define herself as one of the leading interpreters of Peru's musica criolla. Between 1973 and 1975, she sang as the lead voice in the popular trio Los Kipus, eventually leaving the group to pursue a solo career.
