The National Ballet of Canada presents a diverse mixed programme featuring two company premieres, Christopher Bruce's Rooster and Marie Chouinard's 24 Preludes by Chopin, along with Jiri Kylian's Soldiers' Mass, at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts from March 8 - 16, 2008.
British choreographer Christopher Bruce's Rooster is an entertaining evocation of the free spirit and music of the 1960s. Set to eight of The Rolling Stones' most memorable hits, including Sympathy for the Devil, Ruby Tuesday and Paint it Black, this company premiere examines the rituals and posturings inherent in the game of sex through dance. Originally premiered by the Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve in 1991, Rooster has been performed to great critical acclaim worldwide.
Mr. Bruce is currently in Toronto setting Rooster on the company and selecting the cast, which will be announced shortly.
Renowned Quebec choreographer Marie Chouinard makes her debut with The National Ballet of Canada with her celebrated 1999 work 24 Preludes by Chopin. Ms. Chouinard is one of contemporary dance's most exciting internationally acclaimed artists, renowned for her passionate, groundbreaking choreography.
Set to Frederic Chopin's famous piano Preludes, this short work reflects the structure of the Preludes themselves, evoking such emotions as chastity, passion, introspection, ardour and rebellion, all articulated in Ms. Chouinard's strikingly contemporary dance style.
Jiri Kylian's requiem dance, Soldier's Mass, is set to Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu's work. The company has not performed this moving tribute to young soldiers of all wars since it first entered the repertoire in 1995. Featured in this production are the 24 men of The Mendelssohn Singers, the chamber choir of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. -- www.national.ballet.ca
