Members of a Swedish parliamentary committee have criticised the government’s cool response to its report on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Called “Swedish Climate Policy”, the report has been compiled by members of the seven parties in parliament, and is to form the basis of a new climate bill to be presented later this year.
Between now and 2012, the committee says, Sweden can meet the national target of reducing emissions by four percent from 1990 levels. It is somewhat less certain about the 2020 goal of a 38 percent reduction.
But the opposition members on the committee disagree with the center-right government parties, who want to count reductions from projects outside the country. And even the center-right representatives on the committee have expressed irritation with the government’s rejection of some parts of the package, which they say has to be taken as a whole.
