The advancement of human rights and equality in Wales is the focus of the next ICI Lecture to be held at Cardiff Business School.

Kate Bennett, Director of the Equality and Human Rights Commission in Wales, will speak on “Equality and Human Rights – Can we turn good intentions into reality?”

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is a newly-created body which assumed responsibility for human rights and equal opportunities in Britain in 2007. It means a single institution is now responsible for eliminating discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, religion and belief, disability, age and sexual orientation. In her talk Kate Bennett will reflect on the work of the Commission and the broader question of how to advance the causes of human rights and equal treatment in Welsh political, social and economic life.

Kate Bennett was previously the Director of the Equal Opportunities Commission for Wales and has also worked as a journalist, trade union officer and community campaigner. Throughout her career she has been strongly committed to the principle of equality and believes the new EHRC will play an important role in advancing equal opportunities in Wales, working in partnership with other groups and agencies.

The lecture takes place on March 13 at 7pm in the Julian Hodge Lecture Theatre.
