The Swedish government’s one-man study of medical research in this Nordic nation concludes that Sweden continues to fall behind its neighbors – and that Finland and Denmark are having greater international successes in the field.

He also suggests that Sweden’s university hospitals should choose their priorities, and can no offer a high level of research while at the same time providing general medical care, emergency services and special care for the elderly and those in need of long-term rehabilitation.

At the same time, another report claims that the upper classes in Sweden and native-born Swedes are getting better medical care than the working class and immigrants - a serve blow to the Swedish welfare state ambition of providing equal health care to everybody.
