Swedish Foreign Minister Condemns Jerusalem Shootings

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has condemned the shooting at a school in Jerusalem as an unacceptable act of terrorism - where a lone Palestinian killed 8 students.

Bildt adds that an act of terrorism directed at innocent civilians can lead to further escalation of violence.

He maintains that in this sensitive situation both sides remain determined to negotiate – despite the new violence, the situation in Gaza, Israeli settlements and terrorist attacks.

The Swede also rejects suggestions from Sweden’s opposition Social Democrats that Sweden should have contacts with Hamas - saying that the Palestinians themselves must decide on how their future government should look. He adds that he would also refuse to meet any Israelis opposed to a peace settlement but instead only support peace efforts.
