Serbia's PM Resigns Over Split in Coalition Government on Kosovo

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica has announced his resignation amid disagreements in the coalition government over Kosovo.

The prime minister told a news conference Saturday that "this is the end of the government." He is seeking early elections in May.

Mr. Kostunica said Friday he does not trust the coalition partner that he said is not seriously fighting to keep Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia last month.

He has long disagreed with pro-Western President Boris Tadic over how to react to the secession of Kosovo. Most Serbs consider the ethnic Albanian majority area the historic heart of Serbia.

Mr. Kostunica demanded that Serbia cut all ties with the European Union countries that recognized Kosovo's independence. Mr. Tadic also said Serbia will never give up Kosovo, but he wants closer ties with Europe. He said the two issues are separate.
