New Brunswick's State Theatre presents Russia's St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre in Carmen on Friday, March 14, 2008 at 8pm. A free pre-performance insight is available. Carmen is sponsored by Bill and Cathy Powell.
Based on Prosper Mermiee's novella of the same name, this masterpiece tells the tragic story of Don José, a soldier from Seville driven by a force called Fate. This force, symbolized by a flower, leads him to the seductive and free-spirited gypsy Carmen, with whom he becomes obsessed. Forced to choose between Carmen and his sweet-tempered fiancée Micaela, Don José is led by fate down a path to his own eventual destruction.
Described by the New York Post as a combination of "classic purity and modern innovation," the movement of the performance is as enthralling as the story behind it. The music, written by Rodion Shchedrin, is an adaptation of George Bizet's original operatic version of Carmen.
Choreographed by Yuri Petukhov, Artistic Director of the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre, this 19th century story of love gone awry is as appealing to modern audiences as it was to Mermiee's followers over a century ago. -- www.statetheatrenj.org
