Sweden: Allowance Benefit Not Obtained by Fraud

Only few parents obtain allowance benefits by fraud. Earlier assumptions that many parents cheat the state out of money have proved false.

According to calculations carried out by state health insurance company “Försäkringskassan”, 1.6 percent of all applications for the allowance were made upon false premises.

In Sweden, parents staying home with their ill children receive an allowance benefit of 80 percent of the salary.

In a first reaction to its own report, a spokesperson of “Försäkringskassan” called the figures of parents cheating surprising low, adding that future fraud investigations shall focus on other issues.
